More… Say what you mean and mean what you say. Less… saying what you think others want you to say.
A lot of us identify as “people pleasers”. This means that we want to say and do the “right” things to keep those around us happy, even when it is at our own expense. We want to be liked and accepted by everyone.
Do you know that when we are “people pleasing” it can actually be lying? If we are saying something that we don’t mean just to make someone else feel any certain way, we are lying.
People pleasing actually keeps people from knowing the real you when you are not being honest. So, by “people pleasing” to keep someone liking you is keeping someone liking someone that is not really you.
Crazy right!?
I would imagine that we all want people to like us. But, what we really want is people to like the real us. Which may mean that we are not going to be liked by everyone.
And, that is okay.
Would you rather be liked for being a fake version of yourself by everyone or be liked by a few people for the person you really are?
Practice being more honest when you are asked your opinion about something. It could be as simple as where you want to eat. Instead of going along with pizza, when you would rather have burgers, let your opinion be known.
Pray:
God, give me the strength and courage to speak truth in love to those around me so that they can get to know the real me. Please help me to be more and more of my true self, that you created me to be.
Amen.
Bible Verses:
Better is a poor man who walks in his integrity
Than a [rich] man who is twisted in his speech and is a [shortsighted] fool.
Proverbs 19.1.AMP
Faithful are the wounds of a friend [who corrects out of love and concern],
But the kisses of an enemy are deceitful [because they serve his hidden agenda].
Proverbs 27.6.AMP
But above all, my fellow believers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath; but let your yes be [a truthful] yes, and your no be [a truthful] no, so that you may not fall under judgment.
James 5.12 AMP
