Renewing Your Mind, One Thought at a Time
The Christian Life Coach Podcast Episode 78
Okay, I am not going to lie here…. The content of this episode is amazing. The delivery… not so much!!!
I could have done it so much better.
And…. here it is!
Listen to it to hear my heart behind it and what you can take from it to apply to your own life where you are right now.
I do share a story of how repeating scripture was missing the mark.
It wasn’t the scripture’s fault, it was my understanding of it.
James 1:22 says (in the AMP version)
“But prove yourselves doers of the word [actively and continually obeying God’s precepts], and not merely listeners [who hear the word but fail to internalize its meaning], deluding yourselves [by unsound reasoning contrary to the truth].”
I needed to know how to DO what the verse of Romans 12:2 was telling me.
It was through coaching, in my 50s, that I realized what it meant!!!!
WHAT????
This episode talks about what you do when you decide to become committed ot transformation through the renewing of your mind, rather than just interested is feeling better.
I would love to hear what you think!
Where are you thinking in patterns that do not align with God’s Word, while rehearsing verses like Romans 12:2?
If you are ready to commit and invest in transformation and would like someone to walk along side you through the process, schedule a no-pressure Right Fit Call to talk about how hiring me as your life coach can help.

Are you interested in change or change?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:02:51
Are you invested in transformation?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:02:58
This is what we're talking about on the Christian Life Coach podcast today.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:03:03
Welcome to the Christian Life Coach Podcast. I am Shanna, your Christian Life Coach.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:03:10
I have been talking about over the past couple weeks.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:03:14
The difference between being.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:03:18
Interested in something.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:03:21
As opposed to being invested in it or committed to it.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:03:28
And.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:03:29
We have talked about.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:03:32
this in regards to weight loss and business.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:03:37
And.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:03:39
Outward changes, more, you know, more outwardly changing things.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:03:45
And as I was thinking about this.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:03:52
It also…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:03:55
be applied to.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:04:01
the tagline of this podcast.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:04:03
be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Most of us…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:04:09
Would like to have more peace.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:04:12
We would like to feel more confident.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:04:16
We would like to be able to manage our emotions better or change our habits. We would like to improve relationships.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:04:25
And at the core of all of it, we would like to believe.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:04:29
What God says about us.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:04:33
And being interested.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:04:36
in transformation and making changes to all of those internal things.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:04:42
And being invested.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:04:45
are two totally different things.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:04:48
We can spend years asking God. God, give me peace. Help me to be more patient.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:04:55
Help me to be more kind. Help me to not be so fearful.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:04:59
Take away this resentment.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:05:02
We want.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:05:05
our internal state to be changed.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:05:09
But really.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:05:11
The Bible gives us the instructions for how to do that.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:05:16
So we're going to talk about.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:05:19
What does renewing your mind look like?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:05:24
In in the context of.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:05:27
Romans 12:2.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:05:31
What does that even mean?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:05:35
I have, I remember early on.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:05:40
As a young adult, I was a Christian.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:05:43
And we, um… when my husband and I first got married, my sister lived with us, and we had a thing where one of us would pick a Bible verse to memorize each week, and we would all memorize that verse.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:05:56
And…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:05:57
One that I chose was Romans 12:2.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:06:02
Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:06:10
And I would repeat that verse over and over and over. I memorized that verse.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:06:19
Be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:06:23
And repeating the Scripture is amazing. Learning the Scripture. We hide God's word in our heart that we might not sin against Him. Memorizing Scripture. Meditating on Scripture.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:06:40
is something that we are called to do. We are told to do it in the scripture.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:06:45
And…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:06:48
When I…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:06:50
Would repeat that verse, be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:06:56
I would wonder, like, why isn't anything changing?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:07:00
Because…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:07:01
I could say be transformed by the renewing of your mind and then.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:07:06
I would be thinking…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:07:09
Of all the things that all the negative things about myself. I always mess up.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:07:14
I should do better. There's something wrong with me.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:07:17
And I was repeating the verse.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:07:21
But I was also repeating negative.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:07:25
things that were contradicting Scripture.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:07:32
So thinking about, okay, be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:07:38
It's telling us.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:07:40
How to be transformed.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:07:42
Renew your mind. What does that even mean?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:07:47
What, what, what is renewing my mind?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:07:53
And I'm going to read the full…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:07:57
Romans 12, 1 and 2. Therefore, and this is the amplified version.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:08:02
Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies, dedicating all of yourselves, set apart.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:08:12
as a living sacrifice, holy and well-pleasing to God, which is your rational, logical, intelligent act of worship.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:08:26
2. And do not be conformed to this world any longer with its superficial values and customs, but be transformed and progressively changed.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:08:37
as you mature spiritually by renewing, by the renewing of your mind, focusing on godly values and ethical attitudes.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:08:48
So that you may prove for yourselves what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect in His plan and purpose for you.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:09:01
There's so much in there. Man, if I had had the amplified version back in the day, that might have helped me.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:09:08
Because it actually says.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:09:10
By the renewing of your mind. Focusing on godly values and ethical attitudes.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:09:18
So this passage warns against conforming to the patterns of this world.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:09:25
I could go. I could do a whole podcast on that. Maybe I will. I don't know.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:09:30
Conformity can happen without being intentional.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:09:34
We can just follow the cultural norms.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:09:38
Old family patterns.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:09:41
The the dissension and the the.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:09:45
The division, the hate, the anger, the fear.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:09:50
That is so prevalent.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:09:54
In the world right now. So easy to follow those patterns and to be conformed to those patterns.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:10:02
Just watch what's in your social media feed.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:10:04
It would be so easy.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:10:08
To follow and be conformed to the patterns of this world.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:10:13
Doesn't take being intentional.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:10:17
Being transformed, transformation is, it's a deeper change.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:10:24
It's deeper than changing for a few days.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:10:28
It's not just, okay, I'm going to do this one thing for a little while and I'm going to be transformed.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:10:34
It's an inward change.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:10:38
that affects how we live.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:10:41
The Amplified Bible says, being transformed and progressively changed.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:10:49
It it's ongoing.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:10:51
And it's intentional.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:10:54
It's on purpose. It's not one moment. It's ongoing. It's intentional.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:11:02
And our minds need to be renewed because of the old patterns of the way that we used to think.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:11:13
And it doesn't give us a step by step like it.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:11:17
It says, be transformed by the renewing of your mind. It's not a step-by-step. But there are other passages in the Bible that talk about.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:11:27
How to renew your mind.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:11:29
Taking our thoughts captive to the obedience of Christ.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:11:32
Set your mind on things above, not on earthly things. Putting off the old self.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:11:39
Thinking about what is true and pure and lovely and noble.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:11:44
There are so many scriptures that.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:11:47
that do tell us.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:11:49
How to renew our mind.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:11:52
It's not a one and done. It's an ongoing process of recognizing.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:11:59
Where our thinking has been shaped and rooted in fear. In shame.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:12:08
In pride.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:12:11
in our old identities.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:12:14
Our false identities. And we recognize it.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:12:19
And then we bring it back into alignment with God's word.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:12:26
And a practical way to do this is just by paying attention to your thoughts.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:12:33
And not just.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:12:35
Accepting every thought that comes into your mind.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:12:39
Noticing what you're thinking.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:12:42
Being curious.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:12:44
Asking yourself.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:12:46
Is that even true?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:12:47
It's one of my favorite coaching questions.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:12:51
Is that even true?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:12:58
Taking your thoughts captive to the obedience of Christ. Does what I'm thinking…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:13:07
fall into line with what God has said.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:13:11
Does it agree with the Bible?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:13:16
Taking our thoughts captive is active. It's intentional.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:13:21
It involves recognizing the thought that we're having.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:13:26
Questioning it.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:13:28
Does this agree with God's word?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:13:32
And then stopping it.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:13:36
from directing us.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:13:39
And bringing it unto… under the authority of Christ, bringing it into the obedience.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:13:44
of Christ.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:13:48
It doesn't mean…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:13:50
panicking because you had a bad thought.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:13:53
Or believing that every thought that you have is sinful.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:13:57
And it's not denying.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:14:00
Emotions.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:14:02
We're not shaming ourselves for struggling.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:14:06
We're not forcing ourselves to be happy and positive. And we're not pretending that our circumstances are something other than what they are.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:14:17
We're not trying to avoid emotions.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:14:23
A thought.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:14:24
Entering your mind is not the same as you choosing to rehearse a thought.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:14:29
I love I've heard somebody say we don't always get to pick our first thought.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:14:36
But we can pick the thoughts that come after it. Thoughts are going to pop in our head all the time.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:14:41
And we can't necessarily control that, but we can control the thoughts that we focus on, and that we think on purpose.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:14:50
So in the frame of interested versus invested, we could say, I wish, I wish I didn't think this way.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:14:58
I wish I wasn't so negative.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:15:01
I shouldn't talk so negatively about myself.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:15:07
And invested says, okay, I'm going to address this. I'm going to slow down. I'm going to pay attention to what I'm thinking.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:15:15
Interested might think.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:15:18
I just wish I could feel more peaceful.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:15:22
And invested says, I'm willing to examine the thoughts creating the fear in my life.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:15:29
Interested might say, I know God loves me.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:15:35
But invested says, I'm going to notice where I'm living.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:15:38
As though…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:15:40
I am unworthy or rejected.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:15:44
I'm going to invest in believing.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:15:47
what God says.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:15:52
So we can be interested thinking, oh, it would be nice to have more peace. It would be nice to feel more confident.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:16:00
It would be nice to.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:16:02
not be so negative all the time.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:16:06
And invested.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:16:07
says, I'm going to do this work. I'm going to be transformed by the renewing of my mind.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:16:13
And I'm going to use the tools that I have at my disposal.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:16:18
And I'm going to make that change. I'm going to be intentional.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:16:23
And being invested doesn't mean that you're never going to think those old thoughts because they're going to pop in.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:16:29
But it means that you're going to start recognizing them.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:16:33
Taking them captive.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:16:36
And bring it to God.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:16:38
And practice.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:16:40
Changing.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:16:42
from that thought to a thought that is aligned with God's word.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:16:50
And before we can take a thought captive, we have to recognize those thoughts that we've been rehearsing. Those thoughts that are on repeat on our brains and have been for years or decades.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:17:04
You're always, you're already rehearsing.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:17:08
A collection of thoughts.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:17:12
And most likely, if you haven't been doing this work, or if you're just starting it.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:17:20
Those thoughts are mostly unintentional thoughts that you're practicing.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:17:25
I'm not enough. I should be further along. I should do better than this. Nothing's ever going to change. I always mess everything up.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:17:35
Everybody has it better than me. I can't be consistent. I'm terrible with money. I've already wasted too much time.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:17:45
And noticing those thoughts that we have been rehearsing.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:17:53
We recognize that they feel true.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:17:58
It feels like it's true.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:18:01
It feels like that's just who you are. That's just who you are. That's just the truth.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:18:09
And the fact is.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:18:12
Just because you've been thinking it doesn't make it true.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:18:17
It's just been a habit. It's been a habitual thought pattern.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:18:23
And the way that we think.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:18:26
generates a motion.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:18:29
So when I'm thinking.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:18:31
I should be further along.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:18:34
I never finish what I start. I'm inconsistent.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:18:39
What emotions does that create?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:18:41
creates emotions of defeat.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:18:45
Maybe hopeless.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:18:48
Maybe frustrated.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:18:50
And then my actions come are driven from those emotions.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:18:55
And those actions contribute to the experience… to the results that I experience, and that just reinforces those thoughts.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:19:11
So, an example is…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:19:14
You made a commitment to yourself. You were going to work out.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:19:18
And you don't follow through.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:19:22
You decide not to work out.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:19:25
And you might think.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:19:28
One way to think about it would be, I never stick with anything.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:19:31
And then you feel discouraged, shame, defeat.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:19:36
And then you might…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:19:40
Quit the plan. Quit even committing to do it. Distract yourself.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:19:46
You might, you know.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:19:49
Go eat.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:19:51
And you use the setback as evidence against yourself, and you're reinforcing that belief that you never follow through.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:20:00
Another possibility would be that same situation.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:20:05
You committed to moving your body that day, and for whatever reason, you didn't do it.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:20:10
And you could think those other things. I never follow through all of this stuff. Or…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:20:17
You can…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:20:19
Say.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:20:20
I didn't follow through today, but I can do it tomorrow. Or…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:20:25
I didn't follow through today.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:20:27
And that's okay. I'm practicing getting better at following through.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:20:34
And that creates an emotion of maybe.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:20:39
Compassion.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:20:42
Maybe it…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:20:44
creates a feeling of curiosity for why you didn't do it.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:20:50
It creates a feeling of determination. I'm getting better at this.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:20:54
And it creates room for taking responsibility without it condemning you.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:21:00
It creates room for adjusting, repentance maybe even, depending on what it is.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:21:06
And taking the next faithful step.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:21:12
And this is where…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:21:15
Something happens and we can think.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:21:19
I never follow through. I'm terrible at this.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:21:23
I'm never gonna be able to do it.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:21:25
And one way, an amazing way to renew your mind.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:21:31
is…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:21:33
to follow.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:21:34
Philippians 4. So this is Philippians 4. 6 through 9.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:21:39
Amplified version.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:21:41
Do not be anxious or worried about anything. But in everything, every circumstance and situation.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:21:49
By prayer and petition with thanksgiving, continue to make your specific requests known to God.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:21:56
And the peace of God, that peace which reassures the heart, that peace which transcends all understanding, that peace which stands guard over your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus, is yours.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:22:13
8. Finally, believers, whatever is true, whatever is honorable and worthy of respect, whatever is right and confirmed by God's word, whatever is pure and wholesome, whatever is lovely and brings peace.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:22:26
Whatever is admirable and of good repute. If there is any excellence, if there is anything worthy of praise, think continually on these things. Center your mind on them and implant them in your heart.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:22:42
9. The things which you have learned and received and heard and seen in me.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:22:48
Practice these things in daily life, and the God who is the source of peace and well-being will be with you.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:23:00
What?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:23:02
What?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:23:04
This is the prescription.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:23:07
Do not be anxious or worried about anything.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:23:11
But bring it to God in prayer.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:23:14
with Thanksgiving.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:23:15
That is renewing your mind. When you start to become anxious or worried, when you're starting to have thoughts that are creating the emotions of anxious or worried.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:23:25
You turn it into prayer and petition with gratitude.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:23:31
Talking to God about it and the peace of God.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:23:35
will guard your heart and your mind in Christ Jesus. And…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:23:40
Think on the things that are true and pure and lovely and noble and admirable.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:23:45
And when you do these things, when you follow these teachings.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:23:51
God, who is the source of peace and well-being, will be with you.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:23:56
That is renewing your mind. Filtering your thoughts through.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:24:02
dot four eight.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:24:04
Is the way that I'm thinking, is this true? Is it honorable? Is it just? Pure? Lovely?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:24:10
Commendable. Excellent. Worthy of praise. And it's in looking at every situation.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:24:18
And what is lovely about this situation? What is true about this situation? What is commendable? What is excellent? What is worthy of praise in this situation?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:24:29
And when you're looking for those things.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:24:33
And focusing on those things. You're not focused on the negative.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:24:39
That transforms you.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:24:42
And thinking about what is true and lovely does not mean pretending that painful things are lovely.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:24:50
A diagnosis is real.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:24:53
Betrayal is real. Financial difficulty is real.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:24:59
And renewing our mind does not erase those things, but it helps us to experience our life.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:25:08
In a different way.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:25:09
Helps us to change the experience that we're having in situations.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:25:19
Another example could be…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:25:23
A relationship ends. You get a divorce, right?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:25:32
My husband and I are not divorced, so I'm just saying this. But if you're divorced, I'm…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:25:38
My marriage ended.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:25:40
And you could think I'm always going to be alone. Nobody's ever going to truly love me.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:25:48
And the, the, the fact.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:25:51
is the fact.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:25:53
The relationship is over, as it was. You're divorced. That's a fact.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:25:58
And you can think about it by telling yourself, I'm always going to be alone. No one will ever truly love me.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:26:05
Is that true?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:26:07
Is that noble?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:26:10
Is that praiseworthy? Is that admirable? Does that align with God's word?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:26:17
So instead of that, and you and you could notice, oh, man, I'm telling myself I'm going to be alone for the rest of my life. Nobody's ever going to really love me.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:26:26
And notice that.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:26:29
And go, oh, that's making me feel terrible.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:26:33
Like my life feels so much harder when I talk to myself that way.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:26:41
Another option…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:26:46
Reminding yourself.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:26:47
Even though I am so sad about the ending of this relationship, I know that I am deeply loved, I am deeply known by God, and He never leaves me.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:27:02
You can choose how to tell the story to yourself.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:27:08
And this is kind of how I, in my coaching, I use the true and helpful test. It's based on that Philippians 4:8.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:27:19
Is it true and is it helpful? Not just true and not just helpful. Is it true and helpful?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:27:29
And helpful doesn't necessarily mean comfortable.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:27:34
Helpful could lead to repentance. It could lead to responsibility, or courage, or wisdom, or love, or forgiveness.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:27:41
It might be true might be a challenge to you.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:27:46
And that's not a bad thing.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:27:50
Sometimes the most true and helpful thoughts aren't going to make you feel instantly amazing. It might require you.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:28:00
to take some further action.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:28:03
To tell the truth, to make a decision, to stop avoiding something.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:28:10
And that's okay.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:28:14
So is it true? And is it helpful?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:28:19
Be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:28:24
Take thoughts captive to the obedience of Christ. Think on what is true and lovely and pure and noble and admirable.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:28:33
In Isaiah 26:3 it says.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:28:36
He will keep in perfect peace him whose mind is steadfast because he trusts in him.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:28:42
When we focus on trusting God, he keeps us in peace.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:28:50
So, renewing your mind is being intentional about the way that you're thinking.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:28:56
And making sure that the way that you're thinking is aligned with Scripture.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:29:02
True.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:29:04
and helpful.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:29:06
I'm going to end here.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 15:29:08
