You Don't Have to Feel Like It
The Christian Life Coach Podcast Episode 82
What if not feeling like doing something isn't actually a problem?
We make plans and commitments when we're excited and motivated. Then an ordinary Tuesday comes along, and suddenly we don't feel like doing the things we've already decided matter.
I know this because I do it, too!
In this episode, I'm talking about how we can stop waiting for motivation and start practicing consistency. Not by being hard on ourselves, but by deciding ahead of time what we're willing to do and following through from a place of love.
We'll talk about minimum baselines, evaluating our thoughts, preparing for obstacles, and learning to do the small things even when they aren't exciting.
I'm also sharing a commitment I'm making in my own life. It's small enough that I can practice it while my coffee is brewing.
I'd love to hear from you:
What's one minimum baseline you're committing to practice this week? And when are you going to do it?
Tell me in the comments!

[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:13:33
I do a lot of things.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:13:36
that I don't feel like doing.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:13:40
And I also don't do a lot of things that I don't feel like doing.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:13:48
And that is what I'm talking about today.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:13:51
Welcome to the Christian Life Coach Podcast. I am Shanna, your Christian Life Coach.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:13:59
I literally… this is embarrassing, but I'm gonna say it anyway, because I am… I pride myself on being authentic and transparent.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:14:10
I didn't have a podcast come out last week. Is that true?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:14:14
Yes, that is true.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:14:18
Because…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:14:20
I can't remember the reason, but I didn't. And having a podcast come out each week is one of the minimum baselines that I want to practice consistently.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:14:33
And if I'm honest.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:14:35
Well…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:14:36
That's not true, because if I was honest about it, then I would be doing it right.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:14:42
Hey, welcome to my head. You're welcome.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:14:46
Anyway, I didn't do a podcast last week and I have just, I've had so many things swirling around in my head, ideas and I've had.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:15:02
I have had a pretty scheduled calendar over the past couple weeks with clients and calls that I wanted to be on.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:15:17
I constrained a lot, let me tell you. I could be on so many Zoom calls, it's crazy. Um…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:15:24
But I did not do a podcast last week, and this week I'm like, I am doing a podcast. If I have to do it live on YouTube on Wednesday morning, I'm doing a podcast, except I don't have a spot on Wednesday morning to actually do that. So, embarrassingly.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:15:39
And here I am admitting to you that I literally opened up ChatGPT this morning and I said.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:15:47
Something to the effect of I am at a loss.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:15:53
For… like, I just… I'm not feeling inspired about any podcast topics.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:15:58
what are some ideas that you have from things that I have talked about, you know, because my ChatGPT, I have invested a lot of time and energy into.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:16:11
Building up the content bank in ChatGPT so that it is useful for me. And it's very first recommendation, and I'm actually going to pull it up here.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:16:28
And it had my top eight episode ideas. Number one, you don't have to feel like it.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:16:35
And it said, it gave me kind of a little synopsis and some scripture references. And it said, this could be particularly relevant because you're experiencing a version of it right now.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:16:50
And that is my ChatGPT calling me out.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:16:55
So…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:16:57
Here's my question.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:17:00
Why do we think that we need to feel like it?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:17:06
And how often do you find yourself waiting until you feel like doing something that you've already decided that you want to do?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:17:16
Yeah, me too. We have things. I have things.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:17:23
that I want to accomplish, habits that we want to establish, routines, rhythms. And we have particular ways that we want to show up in our lives, to our lives, in our relationships, in our jobs, or whatever.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:17:39
We have ways that we want to show up.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:17:42
And we make decisions about those things when we're feeling motivated, excited, hopeful.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:17:48
And then…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:17:49
The time comes to do the thing.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:17:52
And we don't feel like doing it.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:17:54
And we start negotiating, we… maybe I'll do it tomorrow, I'll do it later. I have a client that coined the phrase, later equals never. So whenever… whenever later would pop up in her brain, she would remind herself later.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:18:09
Equals never do it now.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:18:13
Um, maybe when things settle down, when I have more energy, when I have a better idea.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:18:21
But when we're doing that, we are allowing how we feel in a particular moment decide whether we are going to do something that we've already decided is important.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:18:33
So.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:18:37
What's the solution?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:18:40
What if not feeling like it is not actually a problem?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:18:48
It doesn't necessarily mean that anything's gone wrong. It doesn't automatically mean that you've made the wrong decision that you, oh, maybe I'm not supposed to do that because I don't feel like it and I need a different plan.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:19:03
What if none of that is true?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:19:07
our feelings.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:19:10
And.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:19:10
Don't feel like it.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:19:14
The opposite of desire.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:19:16
They're real, but they don't get to make our decisions. The first time I heard anybody say this was Elizabeth Benton. And she came in to speak to a book club that I was in.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:19:32
And…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:19:34
Online, of course. And she said, and this was years ago when not too long after her book Chasing Cupcakes came out, which I highly recommend. I'll put the link in the show notes.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:19:48
She said.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:19:50
Our feelings can ride along with us, but they don't get to drive the car.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:19:57
So we have a lot of different emotions and we have varying degrees of any one emotion.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:20:07
And that's just part of being human.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:20:10
And we don't have to pretend.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:20:12
I don't have to pretend that I want to do something that I don't want to do. We don't have to pretend that we're not tired or frustrated or discouraged or uncomfortable.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:20:23
But.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:20:24
We also do not let We do not have to let tired, frustrated, discouraged, or comfortable.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:20:32
decide what we're doing. We are not letting those emotions drive our actions.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:20:39
We don't have to make our decisions based on the emotion I'm feeling right now. We can acknowledge that you feel that way. You can acknowledge that you're frustrated, that you're…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:20:53
feeling overwhelmed or tired or uncomfortable.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:20:59
And then you get to decide what you actually want to do.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:21:03
And going a little one step further, you can learn to recognize the thoughts that are creating the resistance.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:21:12
And evaluate whether those thoughts are true and helpful.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:21:16
Several past episodes, we talk about that, right?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:21:20
True and helpful.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:21:22
So…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:21:23
I don't feel like doing this.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:21:26
That is literally a thought.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:21:29
That I'm telling myself.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:21:33
I'm probably, when that comes up automatically, I'm going to believe that thought. Yeah, I just don't feel like it.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:21:43
But…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:21:45
Really?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:21:45
What if we say.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:21:49
What if we turn that thought around? I don't feel like doing this.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:21:54
Two.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:21:55
I don't feel like doing this right now.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:21:59
Okay, that's true. And what else is true?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:22:04
Like.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:22:05
Does telling myself, I don't feel like doing this right now, does that spur me to action?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:22:10
Or does that lead me to or keep me on my big comfy couch?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:22:18
So you can ask yourself, is it true that I don't feel like doing it today or I don't feel like doing it right now? Yeah.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:22:25
I actually don't want to, and also, I can do it anyway, right?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:22:31
So just looking at what am I thinking?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:22:36
And is it true? And is it helpful? Is that the thought?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:22:40
That I want generating the emotion.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:22:44
that I take action from.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:22:46
Because…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:22:47
I don't feel like doing this today or right now. I don't want to do this right now.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:22:55
Like, what does that lead to?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:22:57
Apathy.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:22:59
Maybe discouragement.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:23:01
So probably most mostly apathy, I think.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:23:05
What is the emotion that I want driving?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:23:09
that action that I like, maybe I'm not feeling inspired to do it, but can I just be willing?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:23:16
I really don't feel like doing this right now. And also.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:23:21
My minimum baseline is to have a podcast, so here I am. Literally in the moment.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:23:28
Okay.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:23:29
So I hope this is helpful for you because it's cracking me up on the inside and a little bit on the outside too.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:23:36
Here is what I use for myself.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:23:40
And for my clients.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:23:44
When when I'm helping with anything.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:23:48
Any goal that we're trying to achieve or change that we're trying to create in our life.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:23:54
We want to decide ahead of time, like, decide, figure out, clarify, what is that thing that I want?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:24:02
And decide ahead of time.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:24:05
What you're willing to do consistently to move you closer to that thing, or that way of experiencing your life, or showing up in your life.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:24:19
We want to, and this is my whole framework. Start where you're at.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:24:27
Do what you're commit to what commit to doing what you're willing to do consistently.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:24:35
And do it from a place of love.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:24:39
So
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:24:41
We want to decide what is it that I want to do consistently? What are my minimum baselines?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:24:52
And a lot of times when we're thinking this through, we're like, when we're doing this work, when we're deciding and figuring it all out, we're kind of like.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:25:03
inspired and excited, and it might feel new. We might be getting dopamine hits while we're doing this.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:25:11
And so we are thinking about how I feel right now.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:25:16
And then we're surprised on…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:25:20
an ordinary Tuesday when I don't feel like doing the thing.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:25:26
So when you're deciding ahead of time, these are the things that I'm committing to doing consistently. You don't want to start.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:25:36
With best case scenario.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:25:40
You want to start thinking, okay, on an ordinary Tuesday. When I'm going to tell myself I don't feel like doing it.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:25:47
What can I be willing to do? What can I realistically commit to?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:25:54
And and practice doing it.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:25:56
Even when it's only from a place of willing.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:26:01
Because remember…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:26:03
I've said it so many times. Small actions taken repeatedly over time create amazing results. So we don't… it's not big, huge actions that we have to take.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:26:17
We just want to work towards being consistent and doing the little things.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:26:29
Um, I have so, like, I've…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:26:33
I have a lot of things that I could say. So minimum baselines, this is a concept that I grabbed onto from another coach years ago, and I just love the idea of using.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:26:49
minimum baselines. So, it's the smallest version of an action that you're willing to commit to doing consistently. That is a minimum baseline, by definition.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:27:00
For example, if you have a goal to be someone who.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:27:06
Moves her body every day.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:27:09
Then that might mean my minimum baseline is moving my body for 15 minutes intentionally each day.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:27:19
Now, you're going to think that's not enough. That's not going to make a difference. I need to do at least 30 or two hours or whatever. But remember that small actions taken over time create amazing results.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:27:35
So a minimum baseline, like I said, 15 minutes of movement, whatever that looks like. It could be a walk. It could be on the treadmill. It could be a dance party in your living room. It could be doing squats and wall pushups throughout the day.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:27:50
So 15 minutes of intentional movement every day. That could be a minimum baseline.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:27:58
Spending time with God might mean.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:28:03
Opening your Bible and reading one verse.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:28:09
And then maybe, and maybe praying.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:28:12
Reading one verse and pray.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:28:16
I can commit to that every single day, even on my worst day, even when I'm thinking everything's chaos and going wrong.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:28:26
I can get my Bible out and read one verse and I can pray intentionally.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:28:35
Taking care of your home could be.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:28:39
I do one small daily reset. Before I go to bed, I make sure the kitchen's clean.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:28:47
That is one that I have.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:28:50
That I keep saying that I want to do, but I have not committed to it.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:28:56
So working towards a goal, working towards rhythms that you create, it might just be like, what is one thing?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:29:08
That I can do.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:29:11
towards this bigger thing? What is one thing that I can commit to doing the smallest.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:29:18
Version of it that I can commit to doing every single day.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:29:24
And then…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:29:25
Let that be enough.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:29:29
You're committing.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:29:32
to…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:29:34
You're choosing to commit an honor.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:29:37
what it is that you actually want. And some days, you're gonna go…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:29:42
You're going to go all in and maybe you're going to do a 30 minute walk and a 15 or 20 minute strength training workout. And that's great. That's amazing.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:29:56
But even on the days when you only do the 15 minutes of micro exercises throughout the day.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:30:03
That is amazing, too, because you're honoring your word that you made to yourself.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:30:13
You don't have to go overboard to consider your day is success as long as you're committing to and following through and being consistent in those minimum baselines.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:30:27
It's a win.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:30:32
And it's not about lowering your standards.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:30:37
You're creating a structure that makes it easier for you to create consistency.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:30:44
You're not giving up. You're setting yourself up for success.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:30:52
And then, another thing that Elizabeth Benton talks about that I love is…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:30:58
Consistency comes before intensity.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:31:02
So, once you, um, really, like, lock in those minimum baselines, like, if it's 15 minutes of movement a day, or taking it to a business.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:31:12
Um, idea.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:31:14
If it's…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:31:16
writing content for 10 minutes a day. I'm gonna sit down, and I'm gonna work on writing content for 10 minutes a day. That's a minimum baseline.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:31:28
Then when you get really consistent at that and like, okay, that's on lock. I have been so consistent at writing for at least 10 minutes every day, even on the days that I don't feel like it, even on the days.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:31:45
where I really could make an excuse and not do it. I'm consistent. And at that point, you can decide, okay.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:31:55
I'm going to raise.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:31:59
this minimum baseline a little bit. I'm going to go from writing for 10 minutes a day to writing for 20 minutes a day.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:32:07
I'm going to go from 15 minutes of intentional movement every day to.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:32:14
20 minutes of intentional movement every day. So consistency.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:32:20
comes before intensity. Because if we're gonna… if we think we're gonna go all in, I'm gonna write for an hour a day, I'm gonna work out for an hour a day, I'm gonna clean the house every single day.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:32:32
Um, I don't… I mean, maybe you would, but I probably wouldn't end up doing any of it.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:32:39
Because I'm like, oh, it's too much.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:32:43
It's too much.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:32:44
So.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:32:48
Minimum baselines is just setting yourself up for success and you can always.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:32:55
raise the bar on your minimum baseline. You can create a new minimum baseline that's a little bit higher.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:33:04
And…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:33:05
And doing it anyway.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:33:08
I love Mel Robbins has the hashtag. Hashtag do it anyway.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:33:12
I think she had.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:33:15
And does she have a book called that or something? I don't know, but she.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:33:18
Back in the day, she talked about that a lot.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:33:21
And it's not the same as being hard on yourself. It's not beating yourself up.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:33:25
It's not, ugh.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:33:28
I have to do it.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:33:31
It's…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:33:32
I'm willing to do this because I know that it matters.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:33:37
And you're doing it again from a place of love.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:33:42
I am looking at, okay, I don't feel like doing this right now.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:33:47
But I know.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:33:49
That in order to achieve what I actually really do want to achieve.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:33:56
It requires me to do this thing.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:33:58
And so I'm willing to do it.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:34:02
Even though I don't feel like it.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:34:04
And I mean, honestly.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:34:07
If you're a mom or you ever babysat.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:34:11
And the baby or the toddler has a poopy diaper or is crying because they're hungry.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:34:18
You don't just say, I don't feel like it, right?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:34:22
You're like, ugh.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:34:24
I do not want to change that diaper. It stinks so bad. And I'm willing to do it because I want to be a good mom.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:34:34
Because I want to take good care of that baby.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:34:38
So it's not like, oh, I have to do this. It's so terrible. You know, it's not being, it's, it's coming from a place of love.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:34:47
And a place of generosity.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:34:50
And stewardship.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:34:54
Just like sometimes being loving and kind.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:34:59
Means doing the hard thing.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:35:06
Sometimes loving ourselves and being kind to ourselves.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:35:11
Requires getting up and doing the thing that we don't want to do.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:35:22
So let's see.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:35:27
I… the last episode that I did was…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:35:33
Um, about…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:35:35
Make it boring.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:35:37
And.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:35:38
And that's… it's kind of like… there's a couple different ways to think about that. It could be make it boring, so that I don't have all the drama about it. Like, no, it's just what I do. And that's kind of my thing, like…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:35:51
I podcast every week. It's just what I do.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:35:54
Except there have been a few weeks recently that I have missed. So I'm working on being a person who podcasts every week.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:36:02
Right?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:36:03
And in the beginning.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:36:07
we're excited about it. In the beginning, when you find a weight loss program that you are like, I can do this, and you start seeing progress, and you're excited, you get compliments, you're noticing your clothes fitting differently.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:36:23
In business, you might have all of these ideas and you're so excited to get the website set up and buy all the expensive programs and get your camera and the lighting and all of the things.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:36:35
And then…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:36:37
Until that novelty wears off.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:36:41
And…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:36:42
We don't feel like it pops in your head.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:36:47
So then what happens?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:36:51
Are you going to keep doing the things that you decided are important?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:36:59
Even if nobody's noticing your efforts.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:37:05
Can you continue practicing those habits even when the results aren't immediately visible?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:37:12
Can we allow the ordinary, repetitive actions to just become part of who we are? This is just what I do.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:37:23
In that episode that I did, I said, make it boring. And when it's boring, keep going.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:37:30
Not everything worthwhile is exciting.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:37:34
And we don't even have to manufacture or rely on excitement or motivation to keep doing the things that matter.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:37:46
We can just be willing.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:37:48
to do the thing that we don't feel like doing.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:37:56
I love…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:37:58
Galatians 6:9.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:38:01
Let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:38:06
If
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:38:07
We do not give up.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:38:12
Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:38:21
Whatever you do, work heartily.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:38:23
As for the Lord and not for men, not for likes, not for shares, not for comments. Right?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:38:35
And I want to point out, too, like, I want to distinguish, like, not feeling like it because…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:38:42
I would rather sit and watch Netflix or read my book.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:38:47
And being physically tired.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:38:53
Totally different things. So, like, if you're feeling drained and exhausted, look at that. Like.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:39:01
Anytime you're experiencing, um…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:39:05
I mean, really like any strong emotion or.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:39:10
Like hunger, like being hungry. Am I actually hungry or do I just want to eat? If I'm actually hungry.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:39:18
If I'm not fasting.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:39:21
And it's time to eat. I want to feed my body. So take care of the physical things that you can take care of.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:39:28
Tired.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:39:31
may need to be addressed. How can I get more rest?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:39:36
So, and you can be emotionally tired by the way that you're thinking, the things that you're telling yourself on repeat, and there's physical tired, which you're, like, your body and your brain, they need sleep.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:39:49
Okay? They just need sleep.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:39:53
So what are you willing to do, whether you feel like it or not?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:40:00
What is one thing?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:40:03
What is something that you keep saying that you want to do, but you're waiting to be motivated?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:40:08
It could be in building a business, your health, relationships, spiritual disciplines, finances, your house. It could be resetting your kitchen in the evening before you go to bed.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:40:24
And then ask yourself, what do I actually want in this area of my life?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:40:29
What is it that I want?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:40:31
I want to be a person that exercises every day or moves my body every day. Why does this matter to me?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:40:38
What action would support that desire? What can I do to set myself up for success? What is the smallest version of that action? I'm willing, I'm willing.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:40:50
To commit to doing consistently.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:40:54
And then I love, I always want to do this, prepare for the obstacles. Identify and prepare for the obstacles. What are the thoughts that tend to come up when I don't feel like doing it?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:41:07
And expect those thoughts to come up.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:41:12
Oh, there it is. I knew I… I knew I wasn't gonna… I knew I was going to tell myself I didn't feel like doing this.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:41:19
And then what can you remind yourself of when those thoughts show up, when you identify those thoughts?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:41:27
And choose something so small.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:41:30
It can be, here's, okay, here's the one Here's what I am going to do.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:41:36
I am committing to it right now.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:41:39
And I have been consistent about it in the past, and I have not recently.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:41:45
So, and I got a new coffee pot. Oh my word, total sidebar.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:41:51
I have been using a Keurig for a long time, and I've kind of gone back and forth between using my Keurig and doing French press, and I just decided that I wanted an actual coffee pot where I could make a full pot.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:42:06
Or I could make individual cups. And can I just tell you how happy I am about that decision that I made?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:42:14
I love my new coffee pot. I love, this was actually on my gratitude list yesterday.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:42:21
I love that I can have, like, a little bit of coffee in my cup left, and I can go get the carafe of hot coffee and freshen my coffee cup without having to…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:42:33
nuke it until I finish it, and then make another cup in the Keurig.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:42:36
I love that. It's so weird. It was on my gratitude list.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:42:42
Excuse me while I take a sip.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:42:46
I'll put the link.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:42:48
I'll give you my Amazon link for the coffee pot that I got. I actually really love it.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:42:53
Um, so…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:42:55
Where was I? Okay, my commitment.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:42:57
Here's my commitment.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:43:00
When my coffee is brewing in the morning.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:43:03
I drink my cup of water, which I have been pretty good about that, and I do 10 squats.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:43:11
That's it. Ten squats. Drink my water while my coffee is brewing.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:43:16
That's a minimum baseline. I drink water and squat while my coffee is brewing.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:43:23
That's it.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:43:25
So what is your version?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:43:27
of that, something small enough to practice consistently for the next week, even when you don't feel motivated to do it. And it's not to prove anything, it's not… you're not doing this to yourself.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:43:41
You are doing this for yourself.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:43:44
You are doing this because this is the version of you that you want to be.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:43:51
You want to become the woman who follows through. We so like so often and I have been there.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:44:00
So many times, like, why can't I just do what I say I'm going to do?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:44:05
And using these minimum baselines helps you to grow trust in yourself because you're doing the thing that you said you were going to do. And it's tiny.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:44:18
But you're doing it even when you don't feel like doing it, and that is developing trust in yourself.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:44:25
That is becoming a woman who takes care of herself, who honors her word to herself, who follows through.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:44:34
Who does the hard thing? Who does the boring thing? Who doesn't need to see immediate results to keep going?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:44:47
I don't have to feel like doing it.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:44:51
And I can acknowledge that I don't feel like doing it.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:44:54
And then I remind myself why I decided that it's important, important, and I choose to do it anyway. I'm willing to do it anyway because it is something that matters with me, matters to me.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:45:09
So what is one thing that you have already decided?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:45:14
matters to you that you could begin following through on, whether you feel like it or not? What is that one thing that you're committing to?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:45:23
So I would love.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:45:26
to hear from you.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:45:28
I would love to hear what is that one minimum baseline that you're committing to doing.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:45:37
And when are you going to do it? Anchor it to something else, like I did with my coffee. While my coffee is brewing, I make coffee every morning.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:45:47
If I'm not having coffee in the morning, I am deathly ill.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:45:53
So coffee, that's a…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:45:55
That's a sure thing.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:45:58
So while I make my coffee, I'm going to drink my water and I'm going to do 10 squats. So what is your small thing that you're going to commit to doing?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:46:08
And when are you doing it?
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:46:11
Wherever you're watching or listening.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:46:14
I would love to hear from you.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:46:16
I'll put my email address in the chat, or in the show notes, so you can email me if you can't comment.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:46:24
I would love to hear from you.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:46:28
And…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:46:29
in the podcast resources. And if you subscribe to my substack.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:46:37
I have a free habit tracker download, and it is the… it's a basic habit tracker, but I love my habit tracker, and that helps me to build consistency in these minimum baselines. So…
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:46:52
Go into the show notes to click the link to get the habit tracker or subscribe to my Substack and you'll get an email with the habit tracker linked.
[Shanna Pyzer | shannapyzer.com] 08:47:06
Thank you so much for being here.
